Name : Kanwashram
Directions : 12 kms from Kotdwar on the old Haridwar road near the banks of Malin River
Traditional/ Historical Significance : Kanwa Rishi Ashram is the place where sage Vishvamitra meditated. Menaka the heavenly Goddess was sent by Indira to distract him. She succeeded in doing so and gave birth to a daughter Shakuntala who got married to the prince of Hastinapur and gave birth to Bharat. It is believed that Indira is named ‘Bharat’ after him.
Archeologically the original ashram structure got buried with passage of time, but a new temple built around 40 or so years ago has the idols of Kanva, Bharat, Shakuntala, Dushyanta and Lion cubs.
