Polly, Australia is huge! About the same area as the U.S. And West Australia is the largest State. About 80% is arid or desert. Distances are incredible. European visitors can't believe the distances between 'A and B'. I live about 70 km south of the capital Perth, and about 400 km from Hyden. We were holidaying up at Exmouth (around 1300 km north) at the northern end of Ningaloo Reef. It's a mind-blowing place.. semi-desert surrounds with the ocean teeming with tropical life. Now is the time whale sharks visit the area. There's quite an industry taking visitors out to swim with these gigantic (max about 50 ft!) gentle creatures. I haven't swum with them but my daughter has. We've had them swim up to our boat, as have humpback whales. It's like having a submarine surface right next to you. Oz is such an amazing place. Maybe a bit like Africa without the mammalian wildlife..

If you are into birds you could spend a lifetime studying them here. And for tree-lovers, over 800 species of eucalypt alone should keep you busy (they're still not sure how many)..
