The trail is not suitable for bikes after about mile 16 but you can hike 24 miles up river to Mack's Canyon. From there it's another 25 miles to Maupin, part gravel and part paved road, driveable by passenger car.
There is no need to filter your water if you get it directly from the spring source. I have sipped it many a time without filtering, with no adverse affects

This is a great place to snowshoe into.Kind of a long trip in the winter but worth it.warm nights,many interesting people.
Great Hike to Smith Rock. 95% sun on the trail. Trail conditions are great for most of the year. Beautiful views of the Cascades and rock formations.
