Mike Hartland's conversations
Hi, This brick built chimney is is known as Black Mill and is the chimney for an old dissused steam pump. The old derelict pump house is at the base of the chimney and there is a small victorian cast iron sluice gate and an iron pinion wheel with oak teeth still fairly intact. The pump would have been used for marsh drainage and probably replaced an earlier wind pump.

Lovely view, Mike. We used to love this walk when we lived in the UK. Long ago... we hear the paths are seriously worn by the hordes of hikers these days. Thanks for the memories!
