This shot was taken at a corner at the edge of the woods in Arlington Cemetery, Amelia. The patches of disturbed grass and the lighting gives this a a humble and intimate feeling. Many of those burried here were initially buried in battlefields across Europe during and at the end of WWII but families wanted the remains brought back home. Many others remain in cemeteries where they were originally buried, among these the American Cemetery near the beaches of Normandy is best known. As a Colonel, I have participated as a Survival Assistance Officers for several WWII Veterans who survived into their eighth and ninth decades and then attained a final resting place near their not so fortunate buddies who they left behind. I must say, the Army does a wonderful and very respectful job in honoring those who come to these ends. I certainly increased my respect for the Army by participating and becoming a surrogate member of the deceased family until all outstanding responsibilities of the Army to the deceased or the family have been met. Thanks for commenting on this photo. Best regards. -Art
