I'm an architectural historian in Beijing. The reason why I built, and I'm still building, this collection of photos of Chinese ancient architecture is that I want to stimulate discussion about the protection and care of our ancient relics and heritage. Most of the buildings are in really bad condition and have suffered wide domestic and international ignorance for centuries. If you want to share ideas about the public education of Chinese ancient architecture, please email to me:

I hope nobody in that house has a problem with sleepwalking

Greetings from France

Hello, I am currently writing a book , the first biography of Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist who worked in China in the years 1843-1861. Fortune visited old Peking in 1861 visiting and collecting specimens at Badachu and also described seeing a stone Bixi stele on his way to the Fragrant Hills.

I have found your image of this stele whist researching for the area where he may have visited. I would very much like to use this photo in my book which will be published by Kew Botanic Gardens in September this year. Would you be willing to allow me do this please. I will certainly give you photo credit in the book as it being your image?

I very much appreciate your reply/ thank you Alistair Watt

A real masterpiece of composition!
