A dramatic story from the 1910 NY Times related to the Jewish Daily News can be read here. (Admittedly, the drama seems more in the telling than the event itself!)

This property was previously occupied by Young Israel of Manhattan, part of an organization which was founded in 1912 to promote a modernized form of Orthodox Judaism. It sold its building to a real estate developer in 2007, under an agreement in which new residential construction on the property would include a new synagogue for the congregation.

However, the rapid decline of the real estate market shortly thereafter brought the plans to a halt, making the future of the project unclear. The existing building was demolished in 1910.

LOL This is one of my hole-in-the-fence-mystery photos. I stuck the lens from my compact camera through a small hole in a plywood fence in front of a vacant lot, not knowing what was on the other side. (The opening was about 2.5 feet above the ground; I didn't bother to first crouch down to look through it.)

ATM = 'Automated Teller Machine'. They are machines from private companies (not the banks) where you can withdraw cash with a bank card. There are now a large number of these around, sometimes several on one block. I've started taking photos of them lol; people paste things onto them, spray paint graffiti on them etc.

The avatar is from this photo, of an art gallery window on Ave C, just down the street from the Bed & Coffee inn. I'm not sure what the display is: mini-mummies, perhaps?!
