This building, located at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, is Amsterdam's former main post office. It is now Magna Plaza, a shopping mall. The inside is preserved as much as possible. It is impressive but lacks its erstwhile grandeur.
At the top-right of the photo you see the statue of Atlas, atop the back of the Royal Palace. It was built and used as Amsterdam's City Hall.
In 1806 Napoleon Bonaparte installed his brother, Lodewijk Napoleon, as King of the Netherlands. It was Lodewijk who declared that Amsterdam would be the country's capital (and not The Hague, which is Holland's seat of government).
In 1808 Lodewijk moved into the building, which from then on was referred to as the palace.
The building at the left houses, on the ground floor, the Albert Heijn supermarket.
