Zemen monastery "St. Joan Bogoslov" is situated in Risha mounatain, which is a part of Koniavska mountain. It is one of the oldest monasteries, a valuable monument of culture and art. Zemen is situated on the bank of Struma river, where there was a town and an old Bulgarian fortress in the past. The church in the monastery is a cross-domed building, made of freestone . Built as a cube, it is the only one church in Bulgaria with such a shape. The dome is rised on a high cylindrical drum. In architectural reference the Zemen monastery is a special phenomenon on the Balkan Peninsula. Ktitor portraits from the Zemen monastery are the oldest and have the biggest artistic value after the exceptional valuable pictures of Kaloian and Desislava from the Boian church. Today the monastery is restored, it is strengthened and it is kept as a national monument of Bulgarian culture and architecture. It is situated on 42 km southwest away from Pernik.
