I lived in Otter Creek until I was 16 (1966). I lived across the road from the old and "new" Smith's store, right behind the Suwannee Store. This building was closed and used only for storage for as long as I can remember. The active store was a white block building to the right as you are looking, of the old store. All the time I lived there, the store as run by Mr. Fred Sanders. Back in those days, he didn't have a cash register, or calculator. He would tear off a piece of brown wrapping paper and write your items on it. Then, he would add up the items...out loud, and write your total down on the paper. Math was my best subject, and I remember adding it up with him in my head, trying to catch him making a mistake in the addition. I never did.
