The Cafe facilities are in fact situated above the Stade Pumping Station. This pumps the wastewater from the lower areas of Folkestone from a 20 metre diameter sump deep in the ground to a level less than the height of the building. The wastewater then flows by gravity down a tunnel drilled through the chalk to the Folkestone Junction Pumping Station, and this is then pumped up to an underground Treatment Works at Broomfield Bank.
