Erland Lewin's conversations

The Andean highlands is a barren but beautiful place - saline sandy soil only allow hardy grasses to grow, and the Llama and its relatives that can eat it. People live off the meat, wool, bones, and skin of the lamas, and by trading salt for faraway goods.

This barren graveyard was in one such village - I'm not even sure of the exact location. We saw it on a tour of the "Ruta de las Joyas Alto-Andinas" (route of the high andean jewels) in south-western Bolivia.

The sign says: "Unstable ground, risk of death", which has not deterred the people wandering among the geysers in the distance.

From the Sol de Mañana geyser field in south-western Bolivia, at about 4850 m altitude.
