the river is named Ithikkara river. This place too is named after the river Ithikkara, which merges with the wetlands and backwaters just a mile ahead to form the Paravur Lake.
The abandoned buildings you see was once famed Ithikkara tile and brick factory. This factory at its peak destroyed the entire river based ecosystem, thankfully nature is healing itself at a good pace.
Men of age, recollect the presence of a salmon like fish, it moves against the current, jumping up the rapids during breeding time.
