Impression of the southern tip of Schokland around 1750
A beacon at sea In 1618, a turf-fired beacon was first set up on the southern tip of the island of Schokland. Then in 1635, it was replaced by a new square brick-built tower, with a grate at the top in which a coal fire was lit. In 1825, however, a storm tide raised the sea level 3 metres higher than usual, destroying the tower and 26 houses in the process.
Within the year, the 'Schokkers' built a round brick lighthouse on the same spot. The light was coal fired for the first few years, before being replaced by a paraffin lamp with prismatic lenses in 1845.
In 1856, a 12-metre-high metal beacon with a gas-fired lamp was built. The seabed was finally laid dry in 1942, and Schokland became part of the 'Noordoostpolder'. The lighthouse was demolished two years later.
