Bas van Oorschot's conversations

Hello Ian,

As you can see it is already 20 years ago when I travelled the Tanami Road. A great trip, the most deserted place I was ever in I think. I was with an organized trip and travelled in a small 4 wd “coach”. I think we saw 2 cars all the way from Alice Springs to Wolfe Creek Meteorite crater. I travelled the Gibb River Road a couple of years ago (in a Land cruiser with my Girl friend and her sister) and it looked busy compared to the Tanami road.

The old car carcass on my picture must be from your grandfathers time. I like your pictures on the web. Is it a steam tractor on the third one? Your grandfather must have been a real adventurer. In the 80’s I thought it was an adventure but that must be absolutely nothing compared to the expedition in the 30’s. If you have more old pictures pleas put them on the web, if possible with comments.

Regards, Bas van Oorschot (Rotterdam, the Netherlands)

Hello Bas,

I like your photo of the old hill. I was there in 1951(aged 2)with my grandfather, uncles and family. My grandfather was Charles Henry(Pop)Chapman(1875 - 1955); he divined and found underground water out there during his successful gold expedition in 1932 and subsequently mined a lot of gold for over 20 years. The company was eventually sold to MIM. I would like to go there one day before I die and see it as a large mining company.

I have quite a few photos of Alice Springs in the early days C.1930s if you would like a few copies

Regards Ian Woods

Chris, Bedankt voor het compliment. I lived near the Amstelveenseweg in Amsterdam for a couple of years. It is not so far from the Amstel and I liked it there. It is a pity you had no opportunity to travel through Poland. Although I have been there only a couple of times I think it is a beautiful country. Nice country site and lovely old cities.

You know a lot more Dutch than I know Polish, I already forgot how to say good morning.

Groeten, Bas
