I am from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. I like to hike and ride the bicycle and take photos on the way. The ones that are not too bad and give an impression of the area I post on Panoramio. I like to receive comments and more information about the places.

Andrews Bald was a grassy spot, formerly kept clear by grazers such as buffalo and later local livestock. Since the formation of the National Park and the prohibition against cattle inside it, the spot has been partially reclaimed by the forest. The ecosystem has been disrupted; so the Park service cuts down saplings to push back the encroaching woods. Maybe they should hire a few mountain sheep or goats to do the work for them. Andrews Bald is the highest Bald in the Smoky Mountains and the views are spectacular.

The trail (Forney Ridge Trail) to Andrews Bald starts at the Clingmans Dome parking lot. The first part is very rocky because it is basically a creek bed. It descends almost all the way to Andrews Bald, so on the way back it is a climb.
