A knight, Dirc Loef van Horne started building the castle between 1358 en 1375 on a strategic place were the rivers Waal and Maas joined. It was a good place to impose toll on the travelers. Although it changed over the years its medieval character remains. In the 17th century it was used as a state prison. One of the better known prisoners was Hugo de Groot (Hugo Grotius) a jurist and writer. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1619 (he had the “wrong” political views) but escaped in a book chest in 1621.

Hello Ian Are you going to include the story of your grandfathers live into the website? I think that would be great. It seems he was an important figure in the development of Alice Springs and central Australia Regards, Bas

On top off the ridge it is easy walking. A fallen tree can form a nice sculpture. (The location is not acurate)

Hello Bas,

I like your photo of the old hill. I was there in 1951(aged 2)with my grandfather, uncles and family. My grandfather was Charles Henry(Pop)Chapman(1875 - 1955); he divined and found underground water out there during his successful gold expedition in 1932 and subsequently mined a lot of gold for over 20 years. The company was eventually sold to MIM. I would like to go there one day before I die and see it as a large mining company.

I have quite a few photos of Alice Springs in the early days C.1930s if you would like a few copies

Regards Ian Woods
