This photo was taken in the winter of 2005. I have posted here as a record of the changing face of Lake Preston and will post further photo's in the future taken from the same location at different times of the year to compare and show the loss of water in the Yalgorup Lake system. This lake is listed under the Ramsar agreement and is part of the China and Japan Australia migratory bird agreements.
This was the home of John Henwood, O'okiep chief mine agent and Mine Captain between 1896 - 1903. He lived here with his wife Jane Emma Sutton and had 12 children. They occupied this house during the Siege of O'okiep in 1903 (Boer War). John and Jane returned to England and enjoyed a happy retirement in Tavistock, Devon. Five of their children are buried at the O'okiep cemetery along with Janes father Barnabas Critchfield Sutton.
