Built in 1910, the Depot at Barnesville stands near the junction of the central's former Macon-Atlanta mainline, and it's branch to Thomaston. The Spanish styled building replaced an earlier stone depot built in 1852 by the Macon & Western.

The town was originally named Joetown, but when two railroad executives stopped in the town, one proclaimed it an "ideal" place for a railroad station, and the other declared he'd just named it. The population of Ideal is around 518, and the total area is 1.17 square miles.
