Quiet Lake's conversations

Quiet Lake said:

Chris,

I visited the lake a few weeks ago, very pretty location. We were on our way to Alice Lake so did not stop to paddle this lake, but I hope to some day. For other's reference, the area is gated, so camping is not possible at this site. A great picnic site, however...

We hiked there in '94, it was a steamy hot slog, no trail. Like you say everything was huge. Some areas had no virtually no undergrowth. As I remember the lake shore on Squalicum was fairly steep with no beach, much like most of the southern shore of Hobiton. The last two trips to Hobiton we camped at Hitchy creek, hiked up the creek to the falls, pretty impresive.

Thanks, good to know. Maybe the spring or summer months would be better.

French Creek,

I support the efforts of The Friends of French Creek Conservation Society in their efforts to bring awareness to this vital habitat. I agree with you that it is a unique area. The only other freshwater inland marsh on Vancouver Island that I have seen to match it is the marsh area surrounding Turtle Lake and Trail Pond near Port Alberni. That area is even less well known and in grave danger from tree harvesting. To my knowledge there is no community group watching that area as there is with the Hamilton Marsh. If ever an area needed protection, these wetlands do.
