Reed's Meadow was named for a horse that belonged to a USFS Wilderness patrolman in about 1967-1969. There used to be a Wilderness Station (2 tent houses) in the upper part of Tahquitz Meadow with a small coral that held about 4-5 USFS horses plus Reed, the patrolman's personal horse.
Basin Butte Lookout was constructed in 1933. A recent Forest Service Passport-In-Time project replaced the Catwalk, shutters and door. New paint will be completed by the end of Summer 2008.

This lookout tower was originally located at Estelle Mountain east of Interstate 15 north of Lake Elsinore.
The structure was moved to serve as the Ground Control Tower at Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base in the late 1950's or early 1960's
