this pillbox has took a bashing from the sea, it is still intact but has been partially buried.

still in good condition but the entrance is buried and thus not accessible.

this pillbox is quite heavily constructed, in good condition and still accessible

these concrete anti-tank blocks and pillboxes were to protect st. athan airbase, as this is less than a mile away. this section of coastline was the only access point for an enemy landing as either side are cliffs.

frontal view showing the sliding steel doors siezed by corrosion in a partially open position.

left hand side view of the searchlight housing, showing st. mary's well bay in the background, a machinegun pillbox is located on the far side of the bay in front of a now derelict house, to protect the coastal gun battery which was situated above the small cliffs at the rear of the bay

this building once housed a powerfull searchlight to illuminate enemy shipping, a coastal gun battery which was situated to the right of the searchlight would then target and hopefully destroy the shipping trying to sneak up the bristol channel. unfortunately the remains of the buildings associated with the battery are now buried under a caravan park.

frontal view of the pillbox showing both machinegun ports, coastal erosion is beginning to take its toll on the ground in front of the pillbox.

left side view showing the stepped entrance to to pillbox and one of the machine gun ports

view from behind the heavy machine gun pillbox which was protecting the right flank of a shore battery, (unfortunately the remains of which are now under a caravan park) this picture shows the field of fire the machine gunners had over st.mary's well bay
