Hi, it's interesting to compare your photo from 1963 with mine from 2007. There's surprisingly little difference - though Murren is a bit more built up now.
In another photo you can see the actual funicular - that is very modern.

The original derivation of the name is that Henry VIII built a palace here that would be so magnificent that NONE SUCH palace would rival it.
Sadly there is almost nothing left of the palace. The mansion the stands at the other side of the park was built in 1802.
The Santa Justa Elevator opened in 1902. It takes you straight up 45 metres from Rua de Santa Justa in the Baixa area of central Lisbon to the Chiado district.

The starting point for an excellent 2 hour walk to the Oberer Gletscher. From there you can walk or get the bus back to Grindelwald.
You can just see the Wetterhorn cable-car top station. Now disused, it was built in 1908, the oldest cable-car in the world.
The former hotel, La Soldanelle, has been converted into luxurious apartments with excellent facilities.

The original Kapellbrücke was built in 1333. It has been rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1993.
