Those raised from the dead in Iceland are called uppvakníngar, or the awakened. Those who raise them, necromancers, often dispatch them as "sendings" (sendíngar) against those they wish to harm.
The awakened, just as with spirits of other sorts, can be banned. One of the ways one can ban them is in caves in a cliff.
So it once was, for example, when a man in the Northlands named Halldór Halldórsson was sent four "sendings" by someone out of revenge. In desperation, he went to a man knowledgable in magic, Sigurður Sigurðsson of Kollslækur near Borgarfjörd who banished the sendings to Viðgelmir Cave near Surtshellir.
