Portugal is a place where one could travel back in time, incorporating local legends of magic and mystery. The beautiful village of Dornes is located approximately 27 km northeast of Tomar and, although tiny, attracts thousands of visitors each year. Dornes is a peninsula on the shores of the Castelo de Bode Lake and has stunning views. One attraction is the five-sided medieval tower built by Dom Gualdim Pais (1118-1195), the founder of Tomar. Constructed in local ’schist’ stone and limestone, as part of the River Tagus defence line, it also offered protection for those exploring Zêzere for gold. It was converted to a bell tower in the 16th century. There is also a 12th century church.

At Casa WladiVal’s terraced garden, if the weather is right, enjoy the shade of the several trees and the green lawn: both make for a great option for reading a book or just taking a siesta. If you want to keep active, take advantage of outdoor activities such as biking, canoeing, hiking and fishing.

There are plenty of good restaurants in the city of Tomar, serving national and international food. If you cross the river Zêzere to the other side, you’ll be in Beira Baixa, one of the Old Portuguese provinces with lots of delicious regional dishes awaiting you.

Dutch painter Els Smulders-Waijers organises every year painting workshops around Dornes.
