I feared the size the picture was displayed was this spider's actual size.

A cousin of me lived for some time in Sidney and said that even in the middle of the city, he had a tarentula in his appartment... scary !

He told me neighbours told him how to get rid of such spiders (using a salad dish). He told me that such spiders are so closely tied with the Australian culture that one of the most classic Australian cartoon character were Gertrude the Tarentula.

If this St Andrews cross spider is only 4-5cm long, it's probably the Australian version of the "Epeire Diademe" spider we have here (also known as "Cross spider")
