During 1877 Thomas Bain constructed the road and the tunnel through the kloof. During 1931 the road was tarred
Soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations line the 25 km tarred road which winds along the floor of the gorge, crossing the Groot River 25 times.
The road through the Meiringspoort is a remarkable engineering feat, but the overwhelming features of a drive through Meiringspoort are the wonders of nature. The folds of the Table Mountain sandstone strata tower above the road, constantly changing colour as you move through sunlight and shade.

The purpose of Lesotho Highlands Water Project is primarily to supply water from Lesotho to the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging industrial region of South Africa. In addition, the hydroelectric scheme at Muela will supply enough electrical power to meet the needs of Lesotho.
The project consists of a number of dams, reservoirs and tunnels, and a hydroelectric scheme which will be constructed in four phases. Construction operations, if the project runs to completion, will last until around 2020. Phase IA commenced in 1987 and consists of the Katse Dam, a Transfer Tunnel from the impounded reservoir to Muela hydroelectric power station, the Muela Dam, and a Delivery Tunnel from the latter dam to the outfall on the Ash River, which is part of the Vaal River system. The tunnels total some 81 km in length.
The thing that stands out most about Castleburn is that it doesn't stand out at all. Architecturally designed to blend into the landscape of the Southern Drakensberg, the resort's most prominent feature is the rocky pinnacles that surround it. With Lake Madingofani at its feet, Castleburn lures eland, reedbuck and around a hundred bird species to its peaceful surrounds.
Very nice shot. Voted.
Hendrik van den Berg: This is an excellent photo. I recently visited Kruger NP. Our tour guide commented on these rock formation (you call them Granite Koppies). I think our guide claims these are some of the oldest rock formations on earth, dating back some 3.5 billion years to the break up of the super continent Pangea. Can you tell me more about the geology or direct me to a website that gives more details? I would be grateful for direction to additional information on this?
WOW! Ek het nog nooit die rivier so vol gesien nie!
