This picture shows the real 39 steps where John Buchan played as a child. They are now badly worn away by the elements. A local artist painted these steps ('The 39 Steps') oil on canvas and it was on display in the Harboumaster's House at Dysart. As a resident in the area from the age of 3 until a teenager I would love to have that painting but someone bought it.

Main Street and Tollbooth.

View through the cliff tunnel at Dysart Harbour, which forms part of the Fife Coastal Path route.

West Wemyss harbour, on the left the old harbour masters house, to the right the red roofed building of the Belvedere Hotel and the Cox Stool, marking the Main Street the white tower of the Tollbooth.

The tollbooth was built in 1576 and also housed the town jail.

This museum is housed in the birthplace of legendary explorer of Australia, John McDouall Stuart. It tells his story and holds a small temporary gallery. Open 1 June - 31 August Thursday - Sunday 1pm - 5pm Special openings by arrangement.
