Avebury Chapel owes its origin to the "Five Mile Act" of 1665 by which Dissenting Ministers were prohibited from preaching within 5 miles of their former churches. In 1670 worshippers from Marlborough, Devizes & Calne began meeting at Avebury which was strategically situated just beyond the five mile limit for each of the three churches. Regular services are still held at 3pm on the first and third Sundays of each month
