There were 3 lodges in the woods but only one now remains, the lower loddge which is at the bottom entrance by Cadle Mill. The middle and upper lodges were demolished I think in the late 1960s and there is only a bit of overgrown rubble now.People lived in them until they were demolished and there was no electricty so they had gas lamps for lighting. Both lodges were a fair bit on from the walled garden. There are a lot of buildings in the walled garden area but I dont recall anything resembling a house. We first discovered those buildings in the early 70s and they were literally surrounded by a dense jungle of rhododendrons. I was surprised at my last visit to see how close the new houses are now to the walled garden.

I think you would need a machete to get at the monument if it is still there!!! In the trees behind this photo are some remains of colliery buildings which the Forestry did not demolish. They are red brick buildings and not sure what they were for but possibly bath houses for the miners.

Thanks for the replies. I did not get a notification by email from Panoramia and just happened to log on to check. I am surprised at the location but at least now I know the vicinity for the next time I am up there. I cant say I ever looked in that area because I knew there was not much depth there before you came across the farm fields. From the map I can see the farm also and I do not know much about that farm or the farmer. I wonder if the farmer knows how old the church is and whether it is a chapel and therefore more recent? I have explored off the beaten track the other side of the path but never thought of poking my nose in there because I did not think there would be much in there as such a narrow strip of woodland.

yeah whis could have been an entrnce then the church itself may have been higher? the reason i have not mapped it yet is because im going to find out what farm it is then do it as close as possible

Thanks for posting those Richard. I have posted some comments against the photos but I am puzzled as to the location of the buildings. I am puzzled as to how old the buildings are and what the name of the church was. Tir Doncyn seems to be associated with Mynydd Bach Chapel which still stands isolated out on the common near the Wilie Pub behind the school formerly known as Mynydd Bach school.

yeah the rhododendrons are a really big probem in the valley they kill off oak and birch trees and grow everywhere

this is a wonderful picture the buzzard is one of my favorite birds, i have a video of a hunting buzzard down penllagare woods which i will put on my computer soon, although this site doesnt support videos i will put it on youtube with a link when i have uploaded it
