The French implies, I think --- this is not one of the beauties of our city. Wrong --- wrong. How sad to misinterpret us. We are the beauty of the city --- a city in decay --- here. Elsewhere resurgent. Even in decay--- the patina gives us nobility. Struggling civility --- inner City. Look at what we were. Judge tenderly of Us. (2009)

This photo, perhaps more than any of the others, captures the timelessnes of the city, a very old one by American standards. Smedley is one of the "little streets" of Philadelphia, lined with 19th century charm, Georgian revival, Greek revival, modern in-fill. All this is capped by 20th century post-modern. (April 2009)
