Words cannot add to this photo. The symmetry, the sameness, the grey tones, still the city majestic. Broad Street impluvious --- makes the ordinary extra. (April 2009)

The French implies, I think --- this is not one of the beauties of our city. Wrong --- wrong. How sad to misinterpret us. We are the beauty of the city --- a city in decay --- here. Elsewhere resurgent. Even in decay--- the patina gives us nobility. Struggling civility --- inner City. Look at what we were. Judge tenderly of Us. (2009)

This photo, perhaps more than any of the others, captures the timelessnes of the city, a very old one by American standards. Smedley is one of the "little streets" of Philadelphia, lined with 19th century charm, Georgian revival, Greek revival, modern in-fill. All this is capped by 20th century post-modern. (April 2009)

The three late 20th century skyscrapers ( center L to R) are Liberty II, Liberty I and the Mellon building. The three clustered, right of center (front-back) areCity Hall-nea, mid- Originally Bell Atlantic, and far-The Comcast building under construction. It is now complete, a mirrored rectangle piercing the sky and ever-changlingly reflecting the heavens. In the forefront is the Wanamaker building distorted by the camera. The step-back building is an Art Deco masterpiece. Completing the trio is the Pennsylvania Convention Center. (April 2009)
