Below this grass hill are 237 demolished homes from 97th and 99th streets, and the demolished 99th street elementary school. Another 10 to 40 feet below that remains the canal's contents of 44 million pounds of waste chemicals including chlorobenzene, mercaptans, trichlorophenol, hexachlorocyclohexane, benzylchloride, chlorotoluene, 2,3,7,8-TCDD and many others. The waste chemicals were dumped in the canal 60 to 70 years ago. There is a huge 40+ acre polyethylene liner about 3 feet below the grass, topsoil and clay to prevent rainwater from entering the canal and disturbing the buried chemicals.
