The school was named the Weller School, for Samuel Weller, a cattle dealer in the area. The location of the school, Gratiot Ave. and 22 Mile Road, was the site of an early village known as Chesterfield, after the township name. The village had the Fraser Grocery Store, later the Family Tavern, a depot for the Interurban Railroad, cider mill, blacksmith, a dance hall, and a post office from 1870 until 1907.
