The smaller rock face on the right is about 7 to 8 feet high. People like to jump or dive off of it during the calm summer months. The day this picture was taken the waves were about as big as they ever get. I was sitting in a tree when I snapped the shot.
Team members Robin Leo and Poon Nirahn successfully summit on July 24, 2009 recording the first ascent of Gunung Mt. Tama Abu, the tallest peak in the Tama Abu Range. Two tribes live in the area - Kelabit and Penan. Extensive interviews of Kelabit members in the Ulu Baram and Bario areas found nobody aware of a tribe member ever having reached the peak. Amongst the Penans one older man claimed to have summited many years ago, but his description of route, landmarks and view were lacking in credibility. Otherwise, only stories of "other times" tell of people going to the top. Nobody was aware of any foreigner reaching the peak, although it is most likely that military personnel went there in WWII or the 1962 war with Indonesia.
Anyone with knowledge of this topic, please share it with us. Robin and Poon are quite proud to have bagged this summit for the Penan.

Now that's a well composed shot of this Hanalei icon - better than the postcards!
