jlevinger's conversations

Most of these shops are closed due to the strict security regime and the threat of violence from settlers. There are UN incentives to encourage shops to remain open, but few shopkeepers take advantage of it.

The metal grating is to protect shoppers from trash thrown by settlers in the school above and to the left. It does not stop liquid attacks, such as the spit expertly aimed by a young boy right at my feet from three stories above as I took this picture. Youth are often used to perpetrate attacks against Palestinians, as they cannot be legally held responsible for their actions until age 16.

The view from the upper balcony of the Daniela Passal Art and Media Center.

The woman who showed me around noted that this beautiful village was abandoned by its Palestinian population, but that "there was no massacre here." True enough, but the fact that there was one at Deir Yassin, a few miles to the north, is proof enough that the people didn't exactly leave voluntarily.

It's shameful that the current hip vibe of this town provided by its native Arabic architecture is really due to the violent expulsion of the homeowners.

Really? The location in the google map is marked as Dardanelles Lake. I'm not from the area, but I was told we were at Dardanelles. Please provide an alternate position if you are sure the current one is incorrect.

It's just like the Sydney opera house, only rectangular. Soviet architecture at its finest.
