Takahama is a scenic village with a natural beach on the otherwise very rocky west coast of Amakusa. Unfortunately, recent construction (visible here) in an effort to 'develop' the area as a sea-bathing attraction, has done much damage to the natural beauty of the place.
Mt. Jiromaru is the most popular hike in the Amakusa Islands: an hour's stroll leads to the top of this imposing cliff, offering spectacular views of the archipelago.
