Lived on Murray Avenue as an Army captain 1976-78.

On Super-bowl Sunday 1971 I was a good daddy and took my two older children (Suzanne & Charles Jr.) sleigh ridding here on the 15th. I thought I was standing out of the way near the sand trap on the upper left of the green. I heard a young girl yell "look out mister". The next thing I knew I was hit by a sleigh in the back of my ankle's and launched into the air. I went up over the little girls sleigh and landed on my head.

The only sound I heard was my brain sizzling. I was embarrassed and refused help from nearby adults "I'm alright" I said and proceeded to fall down when I struggled to stand up. Apparently I suffered a concussion and wandered around for a couple of hours trying to figure out how I might get down off the hill and drive back home with my kids. Some how my Suzanne managed to get me on her sleigh and back to the car. I drove back to our home on West Neck Road in Huntington in time for the Super Bowl.

The moral of the story is don't next your kids sleigh ridding on the Black Course on Super Bowl Sunday. I have nearly died on the 15th trying to break par (never did}. So we moved to New Hampshire where I could do rear damage attempting to ski Tenney Mountain.

My youngest son Peter refused to join us at the Black that day. Smart kid! But later in life he left us in NH and moved to Steamboat Springs, CO to follow the snow. He married Diane and is still there and I'm to old to join him. We live "On Golden Pond" and I'm as old as Henry Fonder was in the movie.

Congregation Mickve Israel The Congregation Mickve Israel Synagogue was founded by 42 Jewish settlers who arrived in Savannah, in the new colony of Georgia, on July 11, 1733. Having left London, England, five months earlier, the brave band of mostly Portuguese Jews and two German Jewish families sought freedom and opportunity in the New World.

In 1790 the congregation was granted a Charter from the state of Georgia, confirming the legal status of the third oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. Savannah Jews have been prominent in all aspects of the commercial, cultural and political life of the community.

In 1789 the Congregation received a letter from President George Washington which stated in part: "May the same wonder-working Deity who long since delivering the Hebrews from their Egyptian oppressors, planted them in the promised land-whose providential agency has lately been conspicuous in establishing these United States as an independent nation-still continue to water them with the dews of Heaven and to make the inhabitants of every denomination participate in the temporal and spiritual blessings of that people whose God is Jehovah". The present Synagogue was consecrated on April 11, 1878.

The Torah Scroll brought to Savannah in 1733, and other cherished possessions of the congregation, including letters from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and several other presidents, are on display in the on site archives/museum of this striking Gothic structure. Mickve Israel remains today an active spiritual community, affiliated with the Reform movement in Judaism.

Very curious about how the name of the island came to be. My last name is Shutes. I heard the Indians named it. If so what tribe and where did they go from there? Any information would be great i am planning a trip there in June.

Nice picture but.... this is the first time I have ever seen the sun set in the EAST. Perhapse you are mistaken re the actual location of this picture. Or.. maybe it's actually a picture of the sunrise?

This shelter had sleeping lofts at either end for visiting Boy scouts and visiting Girl Scouts
