I've heard that hunters took Chicharras on hunting trips as a dried snack. They have a buttery cashew taste and are high in protein. I put live one's in my mouth to play music, changing the tone by opening and closing my mouth while they flutter.
In response to your comment on "A dog's life" The location is accurate, right at the end of the road leading to the public beach. The atmosphere was pretty hazy and I suspect that what you have taken for peninsula was actually cloud.

They were launching them off one at a time. It took 9 trys to shoot this at the exact moment of the explosion. Lucky considering there were only 10 mortars in the box. Had Fuji digital camera on nightshot.
