I was born in Sussex County, on the farm in Yale, what turned out to be an old log cabin. I enjoy the history of the area even though I now live in Souhern California. The picturs I have taken bring back memories of which I would like to share.
To the left of this photo is the old narrow Rail Road bed of the Sussex Surry Rail Road. Track was laid to access the trains to the timber where pine trees mostly were cut and hauled to the mill. The tracks were removed by 1946 when this farm was purchased by a Mr & Mrs M W Vejnar from J K Olinick for the sum of $5,000.00
These early Russian immigrants settled in Yale Virginia after fleeing religious persecution in what is now Ukraine. They were originally Russian Baptist upon entering the USA. A Russian speaking Seventh day Adventist preacher held a series of meetings and over 90% of the members changed their affiliation. The crusade was in part an effort to obtain students to a newly formed school, Shenandoah Valley Academy, in New Market Virginia. Many of the members of this organization have attended the afore mentioned Academy and have sent their children there.

Where Howells Mill stood in the 1860s. The grinding stone has been recovered and adorns a local's fireplace.
