drewbeenius's conversations
Hello drewbeenius, dramatic Picture of that rainstorm coming up over Brienz Lake. I take it to my favourites. From exactly the same place I took a photo of Ringgenberg church (also uploaded).

If you're into the beauty of the great outdoors, and, more specifically, into gold, the Illinois Valley is one of the best places on the entire planet to live. The natural beauty is unequaled. The fishing is world-class. Gold prospecting is productive and, in some cases, quite profitable.
If it can be done outdoors, you'll find it in the Illinois Valley! Nothing could be more truthful.

I backpacked and horse packed (w/Outfitter Cal Henry) in the Eagle Cap Wilderness in 1986. This area gets a significant amount of recreational horse use, both private party and by licensed outfitters. There are no other wilderness areas close to nearby population centers such as Pasco or Walla Walla, Wash. Consequently, the grass is overgrazed and in poorer condition than it otherwise would be.
Ironic, as the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest has established the Eagle Cap Wilderness as a "showcase wilderness area", with places such as the Lostine Valley (heavily used major access point)showing signs of overgrazing and overuse by recreational horses. Grass species look "beat out".

This photo taken from atop Eagle Cap looking north down the East Lostine glacial valley. The volcanism spoken of occured in two episodes. The first was subduction zone magmas stoping up through the Earth's crust. The resulting volcanoes were the island arc off North America. The granite we see today is the batholith frozen in time as it came up through the crust. Through time the land uplifted and was glaciated. The second volcanic episode was 10 to 15 million years ago when mantle magmas rose up through large cracks in the local rock. These basaltic magmas became the Columbia river basalt flows. Some of the brownish colored cracks can be seen on the ridge just left of the valley. Basalt flows from them cap the mountains in the distance. More fault blocking uplift and glaciation gave the mountains their current appearance.
