Good to know we aren't the only crazy ones! This was our second attempt and even after the first try we still weren't prepared for how challenging it would be. We reached the coast in complete darkness and exhausted. If doing it again I would not plan to return the same way in one day, or else catch an alternate ride back. Good luck on the 3rd try!

Ian, somebody corrected the location of my photo showing the Nahwitti cable car, was that you? I am looking for the GPS track for the Shushartie to Skinner section of the trail if you have it. adventure at ecospirit.ca

Cheers, Murray

We were also on our way to Brooks in 2001 when a monster of a summer storm hit. The 8 of us (and our dog) moved into this cave and stayed there, totally protected, for 5 days. It was a huge cave, with openings to both sides of the headland. Eventually the weather broke and we had to head back home. We finally made it to Brooks (from the south side) a couple of years later.

I was there by sea kayak during a circumnavigation of the island. Hoping to do it again this summer as well. I know of a trail along at least part of the south side of the Brooks but there may be more. Go to http://wavelengthmagazine.com/ and click "Community" and then "Forums". Post a question there and you should get some help from some kayakers who also hike/ backpack. The owner of the site has also done a recreational guide book that may cover hiking at the Brooks but I'm not sure. He's done three other books mainly kayak guide books but there is a lot of other information in them as well. Hope this helps.

Cheers...Joe

On the edge of the world......

I wonder how difficult it is to drive up to the north part of the island??

Thanks for this pic - I've wondered about those cabins for a long time. There were three - looks like the one on the right is gone now. Our family spent the fall, winter and spring in them in 1971/72.

You can access the park via boat or trail (about a 20 minute walk).

The trail is rugged in most places despite the considerable efforts of trail building crews from the North Coast Trail Society. They are doing fine work as this staircase can attest. Want to support the trail building process? Sponsor a section of boardwalk! Full trip report @ www.ecospirit.ca
