Man, I love Island Lake. Having only just recently discovered it, I managed to drive out there to swim perhaps 10-15 times last summer. Worth the drive from Duluth!
Thanks to the very clear, deep red-brown water, Island Lake seems to warm up a lot faster than you'd expect for a lake of its size. The color is because of the dissolved tannins in the lake, from the coniferous trees that once were logged in the area and floated on top, rotting at the bottom, and growing all around the lake.
To get there- follow the directions Google gives you to the destination "Island Lake, MN" until you get to the last turn. At that point, take a right into the picnic area's parking lot instead of turning "left at Boulder Lake Rd/County Rd 269" as Google Maps suggests. It may be a 25 minute drive, but it'll take you at least as long to get down to Park Point, and even after you do the water will likely be too cold for swimming.
