Sanya Phoenix International Airport is a modern 4E grade civil airport. It is located at the beautiful seaside of the southern end of China, approximately 11km north-west away from Sanya City of Hainan Island. The airport is surrounded by many scenic spots such as the Sanya Bay and “Luhuitou” in the east, and Tianyahaijiao in the west, Phoenix Mt. in the north, and South China Sea in the south.

Hainan Island, the largest special economic zone, is at the very southern end of China and has a sub-tropical monsoon climate. It is a beautiful tropical island, with crystal blue sky, clear sea, sandy beach, swaying coconut trees, and 1,580 kilometres coastal line. Sanya is the most well-known scenic spot and the second largest city in Hainan Province. Sanya, commonly know as Tianyahaijiao (meaning the end of the world) since antiquity, is the southern gate of China and an important seaport for foreign trade. The colourful culture of Sanya comes from its long history and multi-ethnicity. The geographical landscape and the well-preserved ecological environment make Sanya the most featured tourist destination in Hainan. Sanya planning authority has long considered “ecology” as their primary concern and had placed great emphasis on urban developments and urban spatial morphology model. The terminal building of Sanya Phoenix International Airport is ecological friendly environment, integrating architecture and nature, in-line with the direction of the planning authority and the current trend of developing city in China.

Sanya Phoenix International Airport was developed by Hainan Airlines Company Limited (HNA), a listed civil aviation company. The company was established by the privatisation of the former Hainan Provincial Airlines Company in January 1993, and it started operation on May 2nd, 1993. HNA is one of the first companies passed the CAAC121 inspection, and the first airline company that achieved with ISO9000 Quality System Attestation Certification. HNA’s service are complete and believe in service quality.

The design of Sanya Phoenix International Airport is derived from traditional Chinese cultural elements. Pineapple was believed to be a unique native fruits in Sanya, it bears great significant with the city, and it was used as an iconic symbol in the design of the airport. It provides accent to the low rise and organic structure of the airport. It created an awakening of local culture and a new understanding of local identity; it symbolised a unique tropical island in tune with Sanya and the sandy beaches. As the terminal is only a single storey, pedestrian and vehicular circulation within a compact space posed great challenges to the architects and the structural designers. The design also called for exquisite decoration that is local, and yet, their placement and usage are not disorientating and visually distracting, a balance of local cultural element and modern aesthetic strike a balance between the old and the new, the traditional and the modern. The design had to considered functional spaces such as arrival hall, departure hall, ticketing hall, custom, waiting room, VIP lounge, First Class lounge, and some auxiliary spaces such as duty-free store, restaurant, entertainment, café etc. The design took into consideration the effect of colours, texture, auditory and olfactory of functional spaces impacting on the emotional well being of the passengers. The design ensured a clear circulation, visual directional simplicity, and speedy process of departing and arriving passenger. There are no dead corners and visual obstruction to impede the view of the passenger.

An open landscape area provides visual relaxation and green lungs to the waiting passengers, uniting the indoor space and outdoor space. Having an open landscaped space within the airport terminal is unique among airport terminal in China. The interior are also decorated with Hainan indigenous elements such as colourful tropical fishes contained within large bowl; lovely birds in cages; floor tiles of sea, air and sand; stanchions painted with tropical scenes; and lush tropical plants at arrival hall; together with Pyrostegia Ignea and Lesser Bougainvillea flower, imbue a sense of topicality and Sanya identity.

The main colours of the interior are light colours such as grey, yellow, and white. The design uses natural ventilation and natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, especially in areas, which are not used during the night. Together with other measures and features, the design aims to be ecologically friendly and energy saving. The terminal buildings is the immediate gateway into Hainan, it is important to convey the cultural uniqueness of Hainan Island, the elevation and building forms were especially crucial to adopt traditional elements. There are three unique pineapple towers located in three different locations. They are also unique from the air; they can be seen when the plane is approaching from the sky. Though the transformation of cultural symbol is albeit direct and brutal, it attempts to break way from traditional forms and cut across architectural forms. The design also explored a more natural and humane architectural spaces.

The first impression of Sanya city is from the air, the design understood this concern and used glass the steel elements to add transparency and precision to the building form. Pitch roof, a feature common in tropical landscape, recalls a sense of leisure and beaches also strengthened the three dimensionality of the design. The pitch roof also helps to rain water dissipation during torrential rain during the raining monsoon. The interiors spaces are also enriched due to the modulating pitch roof form. Extensive uses of French glass-windows on the side elevations provide adequate natural day lighting and visual transparency, help the passenger to feel relax and calm. Together with the horizontal skylight above the exposed ceiling, it further enhance a sense of transparency, bringing the outside into the terminal. Design bench markings and reference were make to the Nice International Airport in France. The open roof structure also gives passengers the impression of surprise, meanwhile the orderly combination of steel structure makes passengers visually enjoyable. The design is unique and bold, a symbol of Sanya.
