bedankt voor de leuke commentaren. de ouwe jan staat inderdaad scheef. meer dan een meter zelfs. het een en ander heeft te maken met het feit dat er niet genoeg plek was om de toren te bouwen, en men toen maar een stuk gracht heeft dichtgegooid. hij staat dus half op de vaste grond en half op een voormalige watergang (met alle gevolgen van dien).

... And such a rich architecture leaves stunned!

Ter doest Abbey existed beteen 1106 and 1571, when it was destroyed by protestant freedom fighters. all that is left now is a farmyard, built as a retreat for the monks of a nearby abbey and built from the material of the ruined abbey and this gigantic barn.

It is a rare example of gothic architecture implemented in such a barn and it is one of the biggest and best preserved of its kind too.

The barn was constructed in the 13th century (some say 1280 while others say 1200). The ground plan measures 54 m by 23 m and the gables are 30 m high.

The well preserved internal wooden frame is said to date from around 1370.
