Changed my Flickr account. Here is the new link to my photo at the Mogadishu airport, 1992.

Sadly, I have fond memories of several Somali people during my experience here. I took as many MatchBox toys as I could carry and gave them to young boys. Their faces lit up, like all little boys around the world do, when presented with a gift. Regardless of religion, color, politics -- I wish all kids could grow up in a free society to make their own choices in life and not have a religion (or even a denomination) rammed-down their throats.

I met a 30 year old Somali woman in a refugee camp in Kenya when I was working as a journalist there. She spoke the most wonderful English, had a Masters Degree, was polite and dignified. When I think of the tragic situation in Somalia, I think of the thousands and thousands of people just like her and most certainly of the young children who are losing a precious part of their lives to extreme elements like the Taliban.

I can't even begin to imagine having a bright and gifted daughter (like the woman I met) and living in a society where she was not allowed an education, only to be surpressed and subordinate to a husband and told to stay home, have children and make meals, do the laundry.

So many tragic stories in Somalia and it is such a beautiful place, especially the area around Mogadishu.

Thanks for the opportunity to see your photos. I see a smokestack belching out a lot of fumes. Do you know what it is? I doubt that it's doing much good to the air quality.
