Used to be called "Sunshine Park". Before the housing was built there. There was only the old stone building that used to host the friday night teen dances in the 50's. David Davis meat packing plant was also there and smelled up the entire area. Not to mention the screams of the animals being slaughtered there
During my last visit to Columbus about eight years ago, I had to step over the drunks to get to this vantage point. Not a very nice neighborhood, I know, I grew up there in the 40's and 50's. It was a good solid working class place to live. Sorry it is no longer the place I remember.
This building used to be known as the Boys club. I used to go in there in the 50's. Many after school fights were settled in the boxing ring in there, without gloves.
My mother told me that as a small kid in the '20's, her best friend, a little girl, was hit by a truck and killed while riding her bike right in front of this fire station.
It's too bad that most people now living in this neighborhood do not realize the historic significance of all of these old buildings. I now live in another state and we just don't have this kind of history to look at. Save what ever can be saved, because when it's gone, it's gone forever and can never be replicated.
I grew up in this project in the '40's and '50's. There used to be houses acrossed the street at McDowell and on Lucas and Rich. Most if not all are now gone.
