We have a web page on the SPAB mills site (spabmills.org.uk under mills open to visitors)
I would like to add your picture of Mortimers Cross mill to that page, (with an attribution. May I have your permission, please?)
I found a summer view of this mill by Yarchick here on this panoamio web site.Odd really.Found it by accident clicking on different things. The water/stream does hit the water wheel at a very inefficient angle seems to me but if it was just used for milling oats occasionally when the stream had lots of water in it then it would be perfectly adequate. My mill was used on a larger more commercial basis with 3 sets of mill stones knocking out bread flour or animal feed all year round. My mill stream is channelled off the top of a purpose built weir on the river lugg. The weir and Mortimers Cross Mill are scheduled ancient monuments in the care of English Heritage
That was quick.I was just looking at a winter snowy scene of this mill and wondering how the water wheel could possibly work on another separate part of this google earth site and commented saying how I`d like to see a summer view! Looks like an undershot wheel.Nice looking wheel. Is there also a kiln for drying oats before the oats are milled.(I dont have a kiln in my mill because my mill was not used for milling oats)The land here at Brand looks more suited to growing oats than wheat. (I went snow skiing in Brand in 1966 hence my interest)
