Taken during my first overnight stay, 9/10-August-1984. Now renovated into Lincolnshire Air Museum, this is the famous "Haunted Control Tower" of Doug Smith's 1983 BBC2 documentary.

Now demolished and the site swallowed by the industrial estate, but once lived in by the Gregory family on the far (white painted) side, and burned out, unoccupied, on this side. The family regularly heard Morse code chattering from the burned out side, and a benevolent ghost fiddled with their TV controls. Immortalised in Don Charlwood's NO MOON TONIGHT and JOURNEYS INTO NIGHT, Elsham was the home of 103 and 576 Squadrons, in which I have a particular interest, and from which comes my email address. Taken 10-July-1983

With the still extant J Hangar in the background, the now demolished Parachute Store was the location for the first - and best - overnight stay, in thick fog. 10/11-July 1983. This trip gave rise to my novel, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN, and my article in LANCASTER AT WAR vol 5.

Taken on 28-Aug-1981, this B&W photo shows the WO surrounded by a security fence, which wasn't much trouble to bypass. Inside the building, I was overcome by the spirits of the bomber crews from 49 Sqdn who failed to return. On a subsequent trip, Fiona observed two airmen walking along a path - which wasn't there. "It's there for them", she said.

A stop here on the 2009 Motorcycle Adventure, to salute the Great-Uncle of one of our party, killed during the last months of the 1914-18 war. A poignant moment indeed.
