It is quite possible that it might indeed have been a crater. During WW2 there was a Radar Station on the downs above Ventnor and as such it was frequently attacked. I know of one on the way to the top of Shanklin down which, with the passage of time has slowly become shallower, was in the fifties clearly a very large crater.
recently introduced onto the island, these very freindly ponies are now living happily on the downs near bonchurch.

Luccombe Chine. As can be seen from this picture the island is also being affected by increased coastal erosion.
